Awards, Scholarships and Commendations
Students have various opportunities for scholarships and other forms of funding for their studies. These opportunities are offered by the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY) as well as other public, private Greek or foreign organizations, bodies, and endowments.
Awards usually consist of a written honorary diploma and a one-off sum of money to cover specific needs (such as purchasing academic books or equipment).
Scholarships involve financial support provided as a grant to cover living expenses during a specific period of study.
Scholarships of the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY)
The State Scholarships Foundation (IKY) is dedicated to supporting students by providing the right incentives to help them complete their studies on time. Since 2017, IKY has been awarding undergraduate scholarships to vulnerable and other social groups to support this goal. These scholarships, co-funded by NSRF 2014-2020, aim to support the on-time completion of studies for diligent low-income students, as well as ensure equal participation in higher education for people with disabilities and individuals from vulnerable and other social groups.

AWARDS
William Stanley Moss
William Stanley Moss (1921–1965) took part in the resistance against the Germans in Crete. After the end of the war, he recorded his memories and experiences in books that achieved great commercial success. One of these (Ill Met by Moonlight) was adapted into a film and is now also available in Greek translation (Κακό φεγγαραντάμωμα. Το χρονικό της απαγωγής του Στρατηγού Κράιπε, Metaixmio 2016).
The William Stanley Moss Award was established by Gabriella Bullock, the daughter of William, or as he was known, Billy Moss. Ms. Bullock allocated part of the funds derived from the copyright of her father’s books to finance annual awards for postgraduate students of the Departments of Philology and History and Archaeology. The awards amount to £1,000 for each Department. According to Gabriella Bullock, who attended the first ceremony in June 2015, the awards are an expression of debt and gratitude to the Cretan people for their sacrifices during the German occupation and for their unwavering support of her father.

SCHOLARSHIPS – DONATIONS
"Alexis Politis" Scholarship
Alexis Politis (1945–2025) was a central figure in modern Greek philology, with a substantial body of work that opened new pathways in the understanding of Modern Greek literature and the history of ideas. His work also extends to modern Greek history as well as aesthetic approaches, particularly in poetry. He was a Professor in the Department of Philology at the University of Crete (1989–2012), where he also served as Department Chair and Dean of the School of Philosophy. After his retirement, he became Professor Emeritus in the same department. The award was established by his wife, Professor of Modern Greek Philology Angela Kastrinaki, and is conferred upon the best postgraduate or doctoral thesis produced each year in the School of Philosophy that falls within Alexis Politis's fields of interest.
"Alexandros Karavitis" Scholarship – Donation
The Scholarship is funded, by decision of the Rector's Council, from a donation by Alexandros Karavitis and is intended for students of the three Schools in Rethymno. It was first awarded in 2010 by the oldest School, namely the School of Philosophy, to which it returns every three years.
Alexandros Karavitis, a retired IKA (Social Insurance Institute) employee, passed away in 1975. His wish was: "…I bequeath my apartment in Athens to the University of Crete." Initially, the apartment was used to house the University's administrative needs in Athens, and subsequently as a guesthouse for postgraduate students of the Department of Archaeology. Following an assessment of the apartment's rental value by the competent Athens tax office (D.O.Y.), the process of a competitive tender through the Region of Attica was initiated for its lease.
